The popular Best Lawyers podcast released its third series of interviews with partners from the most successful law firms in the Czech market. Another episode came out on the last week in June called Stories Interest Us More Than Numbers. David Kuboň and Vojtěch Láska, attorneys from KLB Legal, discussed litigations and their international cooperation.
The golden middle ground to a Law Firm of the Year award
KLB Legal caught the attention of journalist and lawyer Jaroslav Kramer of Best Lawyers by receiving a Law Firm of the Year 2023 award in the professional category of Capital Markets. The influential magazine EPRAVO.CZ organises this yearly assessment of top-ranking law firms, which is why it’s one of the most-watched events in this industry. “We’re overjoyed by the award, it gave us even more energy for our work,” affirmed Vojtěch Láska.
That’s in part because the firm isn’t one of the giants, rather it prefers the golden middle ground between large international offices and boutique firms. It not only guides clients through the capital market but also helps create new products and locate financial resources. “Numbers are important, but we enjoy interesting stories more,” the partners explained.
You have to be one step ahead when it comes to the law
During the podcast, Vojtěch Láska shared that a medium-sized firm has its advantages: it still has access to more sophisticated commissions with significant companies but it also remains available to retail. This allows the lawyers to gather many diverse experiences with various types of clientele.
However, KLB Legal deals with more than just capital but also litigations in personal injury compensation, which primarily occur during work or transport accidents or in healthcare facilities. Recently, class actions were also added. “We were prepared for the time of litigation disputes to arrive in the Czech Republic. In our field, you have to think about what’s coming and react on time so you too can be on the scene,” described David Kuboň.
Another prominent leitmotif of the commissions is the intergenerational transfer of property and companies. “It’s another topic that we handle ourselves,” Vojtěch Láska remarked.
Having a wide spread brings all kinds of synergies between the areas in which the firm operates. The lawyers represent aggrieved investors, handle the financing of legal disputes for class actions, and unite trusts and charity funds with financial professionals. However, Vojtěch Láska and David Kuboň are also responsible for establishing new legal tools: they founded the first Central-European SPAC and the European SICAV, which is tasked with financing legal disputes. This makes it clear that KLB Legal isn’t limited by the borders of the Czech Republic. “We represent international mandates and work together with foreign attornies and investment bankers,” Vojtěch Láska explained. Among other things, these successes abroad are also related to the firm’s membership in the worldwide League of Lawyers, whose seminar was recently hosted in Prague.
Work and more work
It takes a lot of work to become a renowned expert in the field. The team of fifteen KLB Legal lawyers observes the development of legal norms and the whole legal world in which their cases take place. Plus, the partners must keep their finger on the pulse of the times, monitoring current trends and innovations. “Today, the digitalisation of firms and the introduction of AI in legal practice are unequivocally the main topics of discussion,” noted David Kuboň.
For offices, finding synergy between fields is a big challenge. “Cooperating on a joint mandate – like the Growing Way and Premiot cases, for instance – offers the team more than any teambuilding ever could,” stated David Kuboň. But he also admits that maintaining a good atmosphere between the teams from various fields takes work. “Nobody should feel pushed away, because we need each other and add on to one another. However, this can be hard to balance at times.”
The firm has no shortage of lawyers and paralegals. It offers intriguing work and stories, and it doesn’t shy away from accepting new talents. Rather, it’s actively searching for them amongst the lower legal classes. This is a way for students to gain experience while still in school, making their transition into working as a paralegal that much easier, something they can often do right at KLB Legal.
